How it works

From school registration to a student's published byline.

Register your school

Apply for free — any high school, community college, or university journalism program is eligible. A TrulyNews editor reviews and approves your program within 48 hours.

Create assignments

Build writing assignments with a topic, article type (news, feature, opinion, or investigative), deadline, and max article count. Invite students by email — they see their assignments immediately.

Students write and submit

Students write in the TrulyNews student workspace with access to an AI journalism coach. When ready, they submit their article to you for review.

You review, grade, and give feedback

Read each submission in your teacher dashboard, leave written feedback directly on the article, and assign a grade. Students see your notes alongside their draft.

You approve for publication

You decide which articles are ready. Only teacher-approved work enters the TrulyNews editorial pipeline — nothing publishes without your sign-off.

Article publishes on trulynews.com

Approved articles go through TrulyNews's 8-stage AI verification pipeline and publish with a real byline — giving students a shareable, professional clip they can put in a portfolio or resume.

Everything you need to run a real journalism program

A complete set of educator tools — from assignment creation to publication oversight.

Assignment Management

Create assignments with topics, article types, deadlines, and max article counts. Students see their queue; you see all submissions in one dashboard organized by assignment.

Grading & Written Feedback

Grade each submission and leave detailed written feedback directly on the article. Students see your comments alongside their draft and can revise before resubmitting.

Publication Approval

You hold the publish button. Only work you explicitly approve for publication enters the TrulyNews editorial pipeline. Nothing goes live without your sign-off.

AI Governance: Coaching Without Generation

Students have access to an AI journalism coach that teaches craft — the Five W's, AP Style, source verification, story structure. But the AI is explicitly prohibited from writing article content. It responds with guidance, questions, and examples only. Students do the journalism; AI teaches them how.

Privacy & Parental Consent

For high school programs, the platform handles parental consent collection and tracks verified status per student. No high school student publishes until you verify their consent. College and university students are enrolled directly.

School Admin Controls

Invite co-teachers, manage your student roster, and see program-wide submission activity from a single dashboard. Multiple instructors can share oversight of the same program.

Open to all institutions — always free

From high school journalism class to university news lab, TrulyNews is free for every school.

High School

Journalism class, student newspaper programs, and media arts courses. Parental consent managed through the platform. Students publish with privacy-safe bylines.

Community College

Intro journalism, media writing, and broadcast journalism programs at two-year institutions. Students publish under their real name and can optionally earn income from their work.

College & University

Journalism schools, communications departments, and student-run campus news organizations. Students publish under their real name and can optionally earn income from their work.
