Regan Smith feels vindicated by his Sprint Cup victory
At the Talladega Superspeedway on Sunday, May 8, Regan Smith took the first Sprint Cup checkered flag of his career. It took him almost three years to make this achievement.
According to Smith, “I didn’t know if I was ever going to get it back,” and that “To get it back at Darlington, absolutely it’s vindication. Winning here means more than that win could have ever meant.” He explained that the combination of the hard work given by he and his team, he knew that Talladega would be something to think about, even though he claimed that many people had been telling him that “You can’t race outside of Charlotte”.
Smith’s recovery was a long one after a race in October 2008, when he a lap-pass of Tony Stewart was stripped away, having been ruled as being out of bounds. In this race, Smith acquired his lead by keeping aggressive charges by Carl Edwards at bay.
Many experts are saying that it’s likely that Smith’s win will be compared to that of Trevor Bayne, another first-time winner. Edwards – who was the runner up in both races – explained that “Those guys have earned what they have. They’ve been outqualifying everyone. It’s just a matter of time before they put a whole race together”.
